Skin Care Tips for Living in Southern States

By Dr. Falkner, Mohs Surgeon and General Dermatologist at Pinnacle Dermatology

Living in the southern states offers many benefits, from beautiful weather to vibrant outdoor activities. However, the warm climate and abundant sunshine also mean that taking care of your skin requires extra attention. As a Mohs surgeon and general dermatologist at Pinnacle Dermatology, I want to share some essential skin care tips for those enjoying life in the South. Plus, with three dermatology locations in two states—Rincon, GA; Bluffton, SC; and Beaufort, SC—you have access to top-notch dermatological care no matter where you live.

1. Daily Sun Protection

One of the most significant factors affecting your skin in the southern states is the intense and prolonged sun exposure. Here’s how to protect your skin:

  • Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day, even on cloudy days. Reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating.
  • Protective Clothing: Wear hats, sunglasses, and long-sleeved shirts when outdoors. Look for clothing with built-in UV protection.
  • Seek Shade: Whenever possible, stay in the shade, especially during peak sun hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

2. Hydration is Key

The hot and often humid climate can dehydrate your skin. Keep your skin moisturized and hydrated by:

  • Drinking Water: Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day to keep your skin hydrated from within.
  • Moisturizing: Use a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer daily to lock in moisture without clogging pores.
  • Humidifiers: Consider using a humidifier at home to maintain skin moisture levels, especially if you spend a lot of time in air-conditioned environments.

3. Preventing and Treating Sun Damage

Living in the South means more chances for sunburns and long-term sun damage. Here’s how to protect and treat your skin:

  • Antioxidants: Incorporate antioxidant-rich products like Vitamin C serums into your skincare routine to combat free radical damage from the sun.
  • Regular Skin Checks: Perform monthly self-examinations of your skin and schedule annual check-ups with a dermatologist to catch any early signs of skin cancer or other issues.
  • After-Sun Care: If you do get sunburned, use soothing products like aloe vera gel or after-sun lotions to help heal and cool the skin.

4. Managing Heat and Humidity

The southern heat and humidity can exacerbate skin issues like acne and oily skin. Here’s how to manage these conditions:

  • Gentle Cleansing: Use a gentle cleanser to remove sweat, oil, and dirt without stripping your skin of its natural oils.
  • Exfoliation: Incorporate a mild exfoliant into your routine to prevent clogged pores, but avoid over-exfoliating to prevent irritation.
  • Oil-Free Products: Choose oil-free and non-comedogenic skincare and makeup products to keep your skin clear.
